Imglish lesson # 8 - ttfn
Cats: IMglish, words|Imglish is a real-time language. Often you’re back and forth with someone on another computer or mobile phone. It’s important to let the other person know when you are leaving so as not to leave them hanging. My favourite sign-off is ttfn or ta ta for now, a Britishism in circulation long before the days of instant messaging or mobile phones. Here are some more IMglish sign-offs. Notice how some are abbreviations while others are distilled phonetic versions* of the phrase.
BBBG - bye bye be good
CUL8R - See you later*
CYA - See ya*
CU - See you*
BBIAB - be back in a bit
BBIAS - be back in a sec
BBL - be back later
BBML - be back much later
BCNU - I’ll be seeing you*

I think this IMgish all got started in the 80’s on personalized licence plates. The passion wagon with the furry dice, the shag rug interior, the bad mural on the side of the van, and the licence plate “CUL8R”.
