Ok mine are
1. Hunters Lodge Inn, Priddy, Somerset, UK. The most rustic British pub you will ever see in your life. Real ale straight from the barrel and great cheap food (favourite on the menu is bread and cheese (no imagination needed there)).Cobbles on the floor and old wooden benches (what we call “spit and sawdust”).
2. Cheddar Cottage, Cheddar, Somerset, UK. Lovely little village Indian restaurant, not bad priced either.
3. The Old Spot, Wells, Somerset, UK. Now if you want posh nosh this is the place to go. Set menus with top class a la carte food. This restaurant boasts a classically trained chef that has travelled the world in search of finding the best recipes and ingredients. Nice but pricey!
4. The Bank House Café, Axbridge, Somerset, UK. Newly opened café come restaurant, all organic and not at a bad price. They also sell lovely hand made local chocolate.
5. Bagel and Beans, van Baerlestraat, Amsterdam. A nice little place that does great bagels and lovely coffee with delicious cakes. Perfect for the slow lunch.

Hmmm…top five, eh? I can’t think of five in Halifax- I’m pretty picky- but five in Canada I can do! Here they are in no particular order:
(1) Hungry Chili (Halifax): most authentic Chinese food available in Halifax. Once again, amazing lychee smoothie.
(2) Il Mercato (Halifax): I am a sucker for the tomato-basil pasta with bocconcini. I like Il Mercato’s combination of stylish and casual (read: not pretentious).
(3) The Griffin (Toronto): English-style pub in Toronto that serves fifty (or some ridiculously large number) different types of delicious burgers! Lamb, beef, chicken, veggie, soy, you name it.
(4) The Ethiopian Restaurant on Quinpool. Delicious meals made to be shared for incredibly low prices. Definitely a nice change from the ordinary.
(5) Ameer (One of the suburbs outside of Toronto): Authentic Lebanese food, great service, nice atmosphere, and cheapcheap. Also food to be shared.

Oh, Rowan, the memories, the mouth watering memories. The Hunter’s Lodge is a classic for sure, with the Russian map of the Mendips written in cyrillic

My darling GT, I was the one what tagged Jacy so I’ve already done this. (is there a way to post a link to that on this typepad thingy?)
At any rate, when I go to Halifax, you’re taking me out to eat. And when you come here I’ll take you out for something I like. Like steak. Mmmm…steak…
Happy Mother’s Day!

Since Middle Lahave does not have a convenience store, let alone a restaurant, I shall list the faves near us:
1) Fleur de Sel for fine dining, although I heard that Tratorria del Nonna (new this year) is a close second. Pricey, very nice owners (Montague St., Lunenburg)
2) Best Greasy Spot — The Turkey Burger (Cookville, Lun.Co) Under new management and I heard they have introduced, wait for it, SALADS!! My boys always go for burgers such as: The Stepladder, The Forklift, the Yogi Burger.
3) Best Atmosphere - The Hodge Podge Lodge at Ovens Natural Park (Feltzen South) owned by the Chapin Family. Food acceptable but not great. This is where we always take out of towners. Start out with a visit to the caves and then come back for supper. Around 9:00 Steve Chapin will play piano and sing, sometimes his family members join him — he takes requests, anyone welcome to join him in a duet, etc. Wonderful time every time.
4) Grand Banker/Knot Pub - A tie just because these are local hangouts. I recommend the scallops(with rice) at the Banker and the Fish and Chips at the Knot (their Caesar Salads are popular also) GB is on Pelham St and Knot on Lincoln St. both in Loonieburg.
5) Magnolia’s Grill (Pelham St. LB) - Favourite lunch spot. Recommend any of their soups but the spicy ginger carrot is marvy. Very busy, especially evenings. Place your name on the wait list and go for a stroll along the waterfront.
Most of these restaurants are not open during the winter but Lunenburg is THE place to be in summer.

I’ve been wanting to try that Fleur de Sel place and I’ve also heard tonnes about the Turkey Burger.

Yes, I was hoping for Fleur de Sel or Trattoria today for M.D. but alas, it was Grill’ems on the BBQ — with a very large dark beer so all was well!
