The Simpsons will air its 400th show this weekend. And all I can say is, thank God satire and critical comment are still alive in America.

But GT has a dirty little secret. I have never seen The Simpsons. Well, I’ve seen one episode, dubbed into Czech while living in Prague, Czechslovakia (which no longer exists so that gives an idea of how long ago that was.) Even in Czech - a language I did not speak or understand at the time - it seemed funny, edgy, something I would like.
I don’t wear this gap in my cultural experience as a badge. I’m not proud of the fact I’ve never seen The Simpsons. It’s a shame, really. So why haven’t I seen it? Combination of things. Periods living in places with no TV, periods with no cable, periods with babies when I was incapable of doing anything but falling asleep every time I sat down before the beta waves of a TV, and the simple fact that I’ve never really known what time or what channel The Simpsons has been on. My loss.

Long live The Simpsons.
