Having travelled a fair bit with Air Canada the past few years, I was beginning to normalize to the Air Canada standards of customer and inflight service.

So imagine my surprise when I was greeted by genuine smiles and pleasant people when boarding the Porter Air plane to Toronto. Imagine my further surprise when I sat down on comfortable leather seats with plenty of foot room. And imagine my surprise when the plane landed for a stop-over in Ottawa and the pilot came out and asked how I was enjoying the flight? And he too was smiling.

If I was surprised by these gestures, I was utterly floored when the flight attendant came around with the offer of food and wine at no charge. And here’s the clincher: It was good. The food and the wine were good.

That’s right. It’s actually possible to run an airline with pleasant people, good food and free wine. Who knew?

Flying into the island Toronto City Centre Airport was the icing on the cake. Five minutes after de-planing we had our bags and were making our way out of the airport. No waiting, no crowds.

I’m still picking myself off the floor. Long live Porter Air.
