Dishwashers at the dacha…
Cats: Canada, culture, odd things|Tell me, can a “cottage” have a dishwasher?
Until recently, my experience of a cottage has always been a wooden salt box with no insulation, a party-line telephone, lumpy bunk beds with mildew-scented sheets, chipped dishes, poor ventilation, no ceilings, cracks in the outside walls big enough to let in the mosquitos, and no – repeat no – dishwasher.
I know that a holiday home can have a dishwasher. And a summer home can have dishwasher too. But a cottage? Can it have a dishwasher and still maintain its status as cottage?
Funny how you have the time to wonder about these things when you find yourself at a cottage with a dishwasher.

I’m checking the rule book and the answer is no, a cottage with a dishwasher is not a cottage. Vacation getaways include, in ascending order of comfort: shack, cabin, cottage, summer house, regular house. The main difference between a summer house and a regular house is the availability of snow plowing in winter.
But hey, who cares? At least you didn’t have to spend precious vacation time doing dishes. Lucky.

Unless you have no insulation, a party-line telephone, lumpy bunk beds with mildew-scented sheets, chipped dishes, poor ventilation, no ceilings, cracks in the outside walls big enough to let in the mosquitos, then I think it’s okay for you to add a dishwasher and still call your cottage a cottage

Come on GT, any yard ape knows that the cottage always had a dishwasher, its just a built in one now…

Darn. My adorable apartment doesn’t have a dishwasher, and the cats aren’t getting the hang of it.

Definately get a dish washer, or paper plates and bbq all your meals. I have a dishwasher at home and still find I spend way too much time washing dishes.

Well, I’ve never had a cottage. I like to freeload off my friends.
My friend Joyce’s cottage (she of the cat, Phil) is a newly-built (I think it’s 10 years old) ‘cottage’.
It has all the mod cons including, but not limited to, a player piano and a deep soaking tub.
That’s the only kind of cottaging I’m willing to do.

I think, according to lori’s comfort list above, that you have up graded to a summer home! Love it! love the dishwasher! Love the full walls!! HaHa! Thanks again for a great weekend!

I knew this would be most controversial.
Lori, love the nomenclature.
Deepti, all of the above have been eliminated so is it still a cottage?
TB, you are a yard ape. Nuff said.
Beth, cats! They don’t appreciate you. They don’t pull their weight. Why do we keep them?
Dick, I know. What’s with that. How can you be doing dishes when you have a dishwasher?
Espanya, your wisdom is exceeded only by your good looks
Nank, anytime, m’dear. Hopefully this weekend too

I think a true, old-fashioned cottage does not have a dishwasher — it has one of those old deep ceramic double sinks that is chipped and a dishrack at the side.
However — I see nothing wrong with a cottage having a dishwasher, especially if you’re a working mother and don’t much like getting relegated to “slave” duty while at the cottage.

I say don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. There’s a lot of cups and silverware in my sink right now that would just love a dishwasher…in a cottage or not.

Why don’t we just call it a vacation house?
