I absolutely aggree with your premise. I came from parents who were raised by Victorians. Prefering a less judgemental world, though still a bit too proper to embrace the hippie generation, I believed children should be heard and seen. However, on important issues, (whose turn it was to take the dog out, feed the rabbit etc) I invoked autocratic rule. When the argument was given that we were living in a Democracy, my reply always was,”Democracy stops at the front door. I am boss here!Now do it!” My children are now in their thirties and forties and have told me many times that they now understand and appreciate that we as parents, had not given up our responsibility to those outside our home.
