Boycott gift cards - give money
Cats: culture|Big retailers are making a lot of easy money from unredeemed gift cards.
People lose them. People forget about them. People take them to the store only to discover that the expiry date has passed. People don’t spend them all the way down because there is nothing in the store for $12.62.
And where does all that extra money go? Into the pockets of big retailers. For them, it’s money for nothing. Aunt Betty’s Christmas wish to little Johnny, be damned.
The Aunt Betty’s of this typist’s youth gave money in the card. Cold hard cash. And we loved it because we could do with it what we pleased. Sometimes we even put it in the bank.
But with a gift card you only have one place to spend it and you’d better spend it before the expiry date is out. (Unless you live in places that have banned expiry dates on gift cards.)
Don’t get sucked in this Christmas. Give the gift of cold hard cash. Big rip off retailers, be damned.

Great post - especially since it reminded me of the two aging gift cards from last year, still in my wallet. Now if only Home Depot will let me get a gift card for 12.62 to send back to the giver…

But it makes the hateful Christmas shopping in the stores with the hateful Christmas music SO much easier….
HUMBUG!!!

I am buying everything — and I mean everything — online this year except stocking stuffers. It’s the only way.

TB, I can just imagine Christmas morning waking up, running down stairs and opening up that first present - oh! look everyone! it’s a $12.62 gift card from Home Depot! Do you want me to pass it around?
Nanc, with cold hard cash, you don’t have to put up with the hateful Christmas shopping with hateful Christmas music. And the people you are giving to will appreciate the cash so much more.
Jacy, I’m with you. Online and a few things at Christmas craft markets

I’ve been buying fewer and fewer gift cards for the very reasons you suggest: I’ve tried to use them past their expiration dates, forgotten them, and lost them. I figure, if I’m going to mess up with gift cards, I might as well mess up in a variety of ways just to be interesting.
I went to a wedding this weekend and gave cash in an envelope. Shocker! Never done that before (usually a check or gift card), but I thought it would work best in Aruba on the honeymoon.
Glad to “see you again! Sorry I’ve been missing–huge workload again.

Welcome back Zed. Cash in an envelope. I’ve always wanted a gift of cold hard cash in an envelope, small bills and brown envelope. It’s so James Bond, or something. Lucky friends

I agree. Do you need my address? Shopping online is my favourite and I love getting and giving the cash.

I’m the kind of person that will use the gift card right away. Hell, I do that with cash, too. That’s because I am greedy.
