Terrorists? Seal hunt protesters?
Cats: Canada|Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams is describing the seal-hunt protesters as terrorists.
Excuse me, Mr. Williams? Terrorists?
Is that like the terrorists who hijacked the planes and flew into the Twin Towers killing thousands of people? Or is it like the suicide bombers who sometimes blow themselves up in Baghdad markets, taking 30 or 40 or 60 innocents with them?
Exactly what kind of terrorists do you mean, Mr. Williams?
The captain and first mate of the seal-hunt protest vessel Farley Mowat were arrested after the Canadian Coast Guard boarded their ship on the weekend.
Mr. Williams may not agree with the seal protesters or support the form of their protest, but these people have not killed anyone or committed any act that could be described as terrorism.
Regardless of your position on the seal hunt, this sort of inflated diction is an insult to the victims of real terrorists and real terrorism.
This drama is receiving much international attention. We can only hope that this self-interested, clumsy overstatement will not land all of Canada with black eye.

Does make the seals our allies? They are with us or against us?
I’m confused.
Maybe they’ll start using IUDs or IEDs or whatever.

Well Danny obviously forgot to engage brain before opening mouth today. On the CBC News they were having a bit of a giggle that when the reporter today asked Williams about the Breast Cancer Lawsuit against the Eastern Health Authority, he had replied , “they are in my opinion liable, and should settle” - prompting the reporter to remark - “he must have forgotten that he’s the premier now, and not a lawyer anymore”
Fortunately, all of it can only be good publicity for the anti-sealers (oops, I meant umm… “Pro-cute and furry marine Life” side.
And Dick, I don’t know if they are with us or against us, but the damn seals better make up their minds soon, cause according to George Bush the Lesser, “if they ain’t with us, they’re against us”

I heard old Danny make that statement as well and was equally flummoxed. You just know Morrissey is never coming to Newfoundland now.

Dick, And what about the hakapiks they use to club the seals. Would they be WMDs?
YEs TagBagger I was going to put that in. The whole terrorist thing is a convenient distraction from the real issues on Mr. Williams’ plate.
When you consider that the entire Canadian seal industry was worth a mere $12M when pelts were selling at $52 per pelt last year, and now they’re down to $32 per pelt - making the industry is worth say $7 or $8M, Canada sure has played this one like an ass. The bad PR this is buying Canada in Europe will bury any tourism PR they seek in the next few months. What will be the cost of lost Euro tourists I wonder?
BB, only you would find the Morrissey angle in this post. I gaffawed.

I disagree with you, they are so obviously terrorists.
They fill the clubbers with guilt and doubt, traumatizing the men with clubs until they break down and cry. How can anyone peacefully club helpless animals, so that ridiculously affluent people can wear fur, when they are being harangued?
These protesters must be stopped before the baby seals overrun all of North America with their cuteness and innocence, threatening our way of life and the very fabric of our being.
April 15th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Do you suppose if the seals were allowed to live and breed and overrun Canada, they might also eat the 150,000 surplus pigs in Alberta, and save us the $50,000,000, perhaps five or ten million of which could more than reimburse the sealers for their lost income? That’s a Win-Win if I’ve ever heard one.
What an amazing world - looming world-wide famine one the front page of the Globe one day, grinding ’surplus’ pigs into dog food to avoid them being fed to people the next. Maybe the seals and pigs deserve to live in the world more than humans do.

WP, with that comment you’ve achieved the level of rhetoric that is flying around these parts. Only your rhetoric is more entertaining.
TagBagger, I saw that about the pigs and I sought a brick wall into which I could bang my head. What a stupid world we live in.

I assume those seals are in some way critical to your national security.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:26 am
BB, duly noted, working on it.
Chance, critical not to security but to a tiny part of the regional identity and economy. The rest of the country couldn’t give a toss.
