You know you’re doing something right when …
Cats: Uncategorized|…you over hear your 11-year old daughter humming the tune of Led Zeppelin’s D’yer Mak’er.
It was a hit in ‘73 that predated my rock n roll listening days, but I did later find Zep and D’yer Mak’er became a fave and the album Houses of the Holy also became my fave. (Close tie with Physical Grafitti.)
D’yer Mak’er sounds like “Jamaica” and “did you make her.” Think a British Caribbean accent and you can hear it.
It’s based on a joke:
“My wife’s gone to the West Indies.”
“Jamaica?” (D’yer Mak’er)
“No, she went of her own accord.”
So, my 11-year old is humming to the tune of a rock classic. That makes me a proud and worthy mother,no?
Now, if I could just get her to clean her room.

It’s hard to imagine that she won’t fall victim to the crappy teen pop music, but if she likes Zeppelin there is hope.

My daughter (13 yrs. old) hums the Beatles most of the time. I’m similarly proud.

No doubt she will soon be introducing you to great new music, as mine did shortly after she discovered Led Zeppelin.

“No, she went of her own accord.”
Ah, that’s tie-in to the reggae.

“That explains,” is what I meant.

I learned to appreciate the Beatles from my younger sister! There is hope.

Di,ck, she has but guess what, it’s not all crappy. I’ve had my eyes opened. You just have to listen to it with an open mind
Barbara, it’s already beginning to happy and I’ve been inspired by your experience with RO
Cormac, yes, that song is totally raggae
Cormac2, got it
Deepti, that would be the smart one in the family!

The song will be in my head for hours now. It’s okay, I want it to be.

Oh, I forgot, did you ever hear that version of “D’yer Maker” with substituted with the lyrics of “Santa Baby?”

I really do have to check out these Zeppelin people everyone speaks of.
Is any parent truly able to get kids to clean their rooms? Mine never could. Yet, I’m surprisingly neat since moving out.

One thing at a time my friend.

For what it it’s worth, my four year old struts around the house humming Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” all the time.

Well, I think Sheryl Crow remade that song at some point, so just make sure your kid’s not just humming her version.

My daughter has been into groups like the New York Dolls and the Velvet Underground for years. I am proud of her musical savvy, but I also find it a bit odd. I wasn’t listening to my parents’ music when I was a teenager.
