New York moments: Part 1
Cats: travels|So, I go to New York City anticipating the gruff rudeness you’d expect of the Big Apple ….
And what do I get?
Some of the friendliest, warmest, nicest people I’ve ever met on city streets.
Huh?
New Yorkers were falling over themselves to offer directions or point out the sites. When they saw you with a camera, they asked where you were from. One person fixed my Blackberry SIM card. Someone on the subway asked if I had enough space.
I wasn’t ready for that. Not in New York.
You even saw it in the drivers who weren’t honking their heads off like the last time I visited in the 80s. This would no doubt be the result of the new fines: $350 for honking, and signs all over the place.
Admittedly, I was travelling the subway in off-peak hours and I’m not in the 9-5, Mon-Fri grind.
But still.
I’ve been to quite a few big cities in the States, Europe, Asia and – ahem – Canada. And I have no hesitation saying that New York is the friendliest hands down.
At least to typists.

New Yorkers love to lull tourists into a false sense of belonging, so you’ll move here and they’ll have more people to push around. True story.

Since I am the one that fixed the Blackberry, I will admit that I do encourage everyone to move here, but only because this is a fantastic place to live.
I do enough pushing around during my morning commute.
Hope you had a great visit.

Perhaps you looked vulnerable?

Beckeye, is that how you ended up there?
New Yorker, tooooooo funny to see you here on my blog. Blackberry working fine, thank you very much. My friend showed up just after you left. That’s her comment above yours
Dick, or stupid

I believe I also recommended places to take awesome pictures, introduced the typist to my friends, and pretty much provided entertainment for the better part of an hour.
Are the pictures you took posted anywhere yet?

New Yorker, yes, I’m preparing the pix for a slide show in tomorrow’s post. I have a nice one of you. I didn’t want to post it without permission, but will include it if you say so. Didn’t get to the Met this time I’m afraid.
And yes, the entertainment value was there.

Yay! Looking forward to pictures, and hope you made it to some of the galleries. More details, please!

Love NY, love the people, never encountered anyone rude there. Crushed and lame that I didn’t get to join you guys there.

You have just devastated all that I believed to this point.

I live in America now, and I can honestly say that for the most part, Americans are the warmest, friendliest and most helpful people ever. They get a seriously bad rap.

Allison, yes there was a trip to MoMA and a Van Gogh exhibit. Pictures at 11.
Espanya, there was an emptiness in NYC without you.
Barbara, then you must go, my child, and see for yourself.
Trixie, couldn’t agree more. That was one of the saddest things I encounters when moving back to Canada – how nasty and smug Canadians had become about Americans.

Sure.. post it. If I don’t like how it came out, I can always ask you to take it down… right?

They must have reserved all the honking for when I was there last time. I’ve only ever encountered one or two rude people but then, they lurk in the nicest of countries, even this one. Glad you had such a great time.

New Yorker, already posted the show. Sorry. If you want your pic I’ll send it
Dale, my dear, they were all honking at you, of course.
