Free speech, unless you don’t agree?
Cats: Canada|I don’t agree with right-wing pundit Ann Coulter.
I don’t like her politics or the way she shoves sticks of dynamite into cultural fractures that divide our world.
I don’t care for her publicity-seeking ways either.
But free speech is an important principle.
Free speech is far more important than Ann Coulter.
I say let her speak and show us exactly what a donkey brain she is.
If she violates hate laws of Canada, then arrest her.
But don’t sacrifice free speech.
You’ll only end up handing her more petroleum for her demented bonfire.

I’m with you. This whole thing has put me in the unenviable position of agreeing with Ann Coulter. This reflects poorly on the university, and there IS obviously a double standard. Let her talk. What, there’s some chance she’s going to convince people? BAHAHAHAHA. As if.

Nobody stopped her from talking. She canceled the talk herself to make a mountain out of a molehill (surprised?) The reports of what happened GROSSLY over exaggerate the reality.

Exactly who took her free speech rights away? She was free to speak and the Ottawa Police have stated she had options to address her safety concerns, she pulled the plug her self.
Manufactured issue! She’s already gotten to much free press from this.

I hadn’t heard that she was to speak in Canada, but every time she speaks at a college or university in the U.S., she’s either shouted down or there are threats that she will be shouted down if she tries to speak. As intensely as I dislike her, I feel very strongly that she should be able to speak, especially in an academic environment where free speech is supposedly prized.

I feel I have to chirp in one more time. In Canada we do not have the same concept of Free Speech as protected in the United States of America under the First Amendment. We, rightfully so, believe that there are reasonable restrictions on free speech and the prevention of hate speech is one of them. We believe it so much that it is entrenched into our laws and guiding documents (Charter or Rights and Freedoms).
What Ann Coulter says under the guise of free speech is nothing that should be protected. No one should have the right to spread a hateful message such as she does against Muslims, the LGBT, and other identifiable minorities. She supports such insulting ideas as racial profiling, calls Muslims ragheads, and many other offensive commentary that should be stopped. She’s also a pathalogical liar and somehow gets away with publishing such drivel as “Treason…” and “Slander…”.
Last I checked this is not how Canadian or anyone has intelligent or insightful dialogue.
She even had the gall to accuse U of O of a hate crime for preventing her from speaking… another lie since it’s been well reported since she pulled the plug herself.
