Turkey? No. I’ll have oysters for Thanksgiving
photos| 7 Comments »With Canadian Thanksgiving here and gone, I’m again left wondering why people insist on celebrating with turkey. OK, yes there’s tradition, but with so many other delicious things to eat, why waste an occasion on a big butter-injected buzzard? Why not indulge in something really delish? Something like oysters, hot sauce and white wine.
Bluenose Marathon: drizzle, guts and determination
photos| 22 Comments »Breaking news: the 10-year old typist placed 58th in over 1000 runners most of whom were adults.
Usually it rains for the Bluenose Marathon held every year on this weekend.
This year we were lucky: it only drizzled.
A couple of the typists ran the 5K. I was official photographer.
And let me tell you: L-series lenses talk.
Using my [...]
Smoke on the water
photos| 14 Comments »When the air temperature gets colder than the water, it causes steam to rise.
On this morning the temperature was -17C and I had to breathe into my gloves to keep my hands from freezing as I awaited the magical moments when the sun filtered though the cloud and fog to mix some fantastic colours.
These shots [...]
New York Moments: Part 2 – Spot the typist
photos, travels| 6 Comments »Give me a camera and put me in a city like New York with its energy, history, hustle, architecture, art, characters and icons and I’m in heaven. Here is my photo essay of my excellent weekend in New York. Or you can go to directly to Flickr for more explanation of the shots.
Funky tulips in the Public Gardens
odd things, photos| 10 Comments »I spotted these tulips in late spring. They were growing at the entrance of my city’s lovely Victorian Public Gardens.
A few shots from below and a bit whiz-bam-bang with Photoshop and the Victorian charm is transformed into the 21st-century funky.
A day in the life of a lobster
photos| 16 Comments »On a cold foggy morning, I happened to be on a wharf as the lobster boats were arriving with their catch.
This prized shellfish is destined for fine fish markets the world over and it was exciting to witness it landing right before my eyes.
Later that night, after the sun burned through the fog, there was [...]
Spiders ‘n webs
Canada, beauty, photos| 17 Comments »Go here to view this set in Flickr.
Early one sunny August morning, I turned off the highway to take a picture of a beautiful still lake. The lake was pretty, but it was in the field next to the lake that I stumbled upon gold.
There were hundreds of spiders’ webs*, their gossamer fibers sparkling with [...]
St. Maarten through a typist’s lens

A week in this French/Dutch Caribbean island brought some fantastic seascapes, skyscapes and lightscapes for a typist on the roam with a camera.
Sadly, the UV filter on my favourite lens (Canon 17-40mm) was smashed in transit. When I uncovered the lens on the first morning I found broken [...]
What do you do with an old oil storage tank?
Canada, culture, odd things, photos, travels| 7 Comments »Well, you convert it into a bar and grill, of course. Or at least that’s what they do here at Flippers..I’d heard of this place but didn’t really believe until I spotted it with my own eyes one day. It is located about an hour and a half’s drive from my house. Luckily I had [...]
Red
odd things, photos| 10 Comments »Red, wherever it appears, jumps out and grabs you. That’s why it is the colour of emergency and caution. And that’s why it’s a photographer’s dream. These are some reds picked out from this typist’s collection.

Surfer dudes take to waves
photos| 14 Comments ».
I live near a beach that is considered to be a surfer’s paradise. The dudes and dudettes come by the droves with their wet suits and surfer boards. Temperature is not an issue with these people.
Last Sunday was no exception. It was sunny and warm for February, and I happened to be there with a [...]
Christmas in the Cotswolds
beauty, photos, travels| 9 Comments ».
A cloudy day burst into flame at the very end as the sun dropped below of line of cloud, casting orange, red and pink hues across the underside of the cloud. These shots were taken in Warwickshire in the Cotswolds, a range of hills in Central England. This is where I spent Christmas.
The colours [...]
